Frequently Asked Questions

Is Markdownly Anything free?

Yes. HTML, JSON and TXT export are free and unlimited with no login. MD, DOCX, PDF and EPUB can be tried once per format per browser session (watermarked). For unlimited watermark-free exports there is a €2.99 24-hour Day-Pass or a €29 one-time Founder's Edition.

Which file formats can it convert?

Markdownly Anything converts bidirectionally between Markdown and HTML, JSON, TXT, DOCX, PDF, EPUB, MDX, RTF, ODT and LaTeX, and additionally imports PowerPoint (.pptx), Excel (.xlsx) and CSV files, any public web page by URL, and Google Docs via a public share link.

Do I need to upload my files?

No. Standard conversions run client-side in your browser with IndexedDB persistence — files are not uploaded to a server. Only web page import, Google Docs import and Whisper Cloud voice transcription are processed server-side.

Can I import a web page or a Google Doc?

Yes. Paste any publicly accessible web page URL or a Google Docs share link set to 'Anyone with the link', and Markdownly converts it to Markdown and any output format. Login-walled, paywalled or JavaScript-only (SPA) pages are not supported.

What does the Founder's Edition include?

A one-time €29 purchase (no subscription, no recurring price) giving one-time access to all current and future Pro features — today and going forward. Included now: unlimited watermark-free exports, the Pro export formats (.mdx, .rtf, .odt, .tex), MD→PDF, and Whisper Cloud voice transcription. Planned for Q3 2026 (opt-in): cloud sync (Drive, OneDrive, Box, S3) and GitHub integration. Plus a 50% Founder discount on the optional AI Pro add-on. A regular Pro subscription starts in Q3 2026 at €9/month — Founders are exempt from it.

Does voice dictation work in every browser?

Free Web Speech dictation uses your browser's built-in speech recognition (12 languages); Markdownly Anything does not upload the audio, but some browsers — for example Chrome — send it to the browser's own vendor for recognition. The Founder Edition adds Whisper Cloud (OpenAI Whisper) for higher accuracy and for browsers without Web Speech support such as Microsoft Edge.

Which languages does Markdownly Anything support?

The interface is available in 12 languages: German, English, Chinese, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, Japanese and Arabic (with full right-to-left layout). Voice dictation covers the same 12 languages. The conversion itself is language-agnostic — it handles Markdown and documents in any language or script, because all text is processed as Unicode.

Do I need an account to use the editor?

No. The Markdown editor is free and works without signing in — it runs in your browser with live preview, and your text stays on your device. The saved-files library also runs locally in your browser without an account; only the planned cloud sync (Q3 2026) would need a signed-in account.

Is Markdownly Anything a Pandoc alternative?

A simpler alternative to Pandoc when you want quick, private, bidirectional conversions without a command line — Markdownly Anything runs in your browser with a visual editor, no installation, no Python, no CLI. Your documents stay on your device.

Is Markdownly Anything a MarkItDown alternative?

Yes, with a different focus. MarkItDown converts files to Markdown one-way and runs as a Python/CLI tool; Markdownly Anything is bidirectional (Markdown to and from DOCX, PDF, EPUB and more, in both directions) and runs in the browser with a visual interface — no Python, no command line. Choose Markdownly Anything when you need round-trip conversion and a no-install interface.

How is it different from online file converters?

Your documents stay on your device. Online converters — and LLM or OCR conversion services — upload your file to a server; Markdownly Anything converts uploaded files entirely in your browser, so nothing is sent anywhere. Only optional features that need a server — web page import, Google Docs import and Whisper Cloud voice — fetch or process server-side, and that is always made clear. Choose Markdownly Anything when your documents are private or confidential.

Who is Markdownly Anything for?

For authors, creators, coaches, researchers and anyone who wants to move documents between Markdown, DOCX, PDF, EPUB, RTF and LaTeX without a terminal, Python or Pandoc — simple, private, in the browser.

Are there formats or features it doesn't handle well yet?

Yes — footnotes, complex tables and scanned (image-only) PDFs are not fully supported yet. Most documents convert cleanly with headings, bold, italic, lists and links preserved; these specific cases are on the roadmap.

What is the best free PDF converter?

It depends on the direction. To get text OUT of a PDF — into TXT, HTML or JSON — Markdownly Anything is free and unlimited with no login, and it runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. To CREATE a PDF, Markdownly gives you one watermarked export per browser session; unlimited watermark-free export is €2.99 for a 24-hour Day-Pass or €29 once for the Founder's Edition. If you only ever need to generate PDFs and do not mind a command line, Pandoc is free and stays free. The trade-off is the usual one: convenience and privacy against setup effort.

How do I create a Markdown file?

A Markdown file is a plain text file with the extension .md — any text editor will do. The three things you need: # for a heading, **bold** for emphasis, and - for a list item. In Markdownly Anything you write in a live-preview editor and your draft is saved locally, so it survives a reload. If you already have the content as a DOCX, PDF, EPUB or a web page, converting it is faster than retyping it. The .md download itself is free once per browser session (watermarked), unlimited with a Day-Pass or the Founder's Edition.

How can I convert a PDF into a text document?

Pick the PDF, pick the target format, done. To TXT, HTML or JSON it is free and unlimited with no login; to DOCX it is one watermarked conversion per browser session. The conversion runs in your browser — the file is not uploaded anywhere. One limit worth knowing: a scanned PDF is an image without a text layer, so there is no text to extract; that needs OCR, which Markdownly does not include. The quick test is whether you can select the text in a PDF viewer.

What kind of format is Markdown?

Markdown is plain text with a handful of punctuation marks standing in for structure: # for headings, * for emphasis, - for lists. John Gruber designed it in 2004; the file extension is .md. Its point is that it stays readable without any program, works with version control, and puts no vendor between you and your own text. Markdownly Anything converts in both directions between Markdown and HTML, JSON, TXT, DOCX, PDF, EPUB, MDX, RTF, ODT and LaTeX.
